Parents As Learners (PALs)
Parents will be able to attend FREE classes. Here are samples of classes you can attend for free:
Navigating Power School (Elementary and Middle School Focus) – Believe it or not, parents can access their child’s grades, attendance, and assignments 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Parents will learn how to use the new Power School website. Parents will need to bring the Student Confidential ID (If you do not have one, email powerschoolid@pinnaclecsi.org. A letter will be mailed to you with the number.)
Just Right Books for Elementary Students (Elementary School) – How can parents of elementary students make sure that their child is choosing “just right” books? Books that are not too hard, and not too easy. Start by using the rule of 5.
Homework Help 101 (Elementary and Middle School Focus) – There are several techniques that parents can use to make homework time much more successful and productive. In this presentation, concepts such as time, place, motivation, and encouragement will be discussed.
Making the Most of Conferences (Elementary and Middle School Focus) - The fifteen minutes that parents get to talk with their child’s teacher at Parent / Teacher Conferences is very brief. This session will give parents ideas on how to make the best use of that time with areas to focus on, ways to communicate with teachers, and common language that teachers may use when discussing a student’s academic progress.
Successful Partner Reading (Elementary and Middle School Focus) – Whether students read with a parent or on their own, there are four strategies that parents can work on with their student to help them understand the text. This session will focus on learning and practicing Predictions, Ask and Answer Questions, Retell and Summarize, and Make a Connection. During refreshment time, there will be a Book Swap. Bring books that you would like to trade.
Spanish Literacy Table Offers Free Books to Parents:
One of the ways that parents who only read Spanish can help their students at home is by having grade level appropriate materials available in their home language. On PALs Night we will be distributing Mexican schoolbooks for grades 1-5. These materials were donated by the Mexican Consulate to Colorado schools. There is no cost to parents for these textbooks, however, supplies are limited. Please stop by the Spanish Literacy Table to receive one grade level book set per student.
The Pinnacle Charter School believes that the number one reason for the success of students is ” You, The Parent”.
Parent involvement is crucial to the success of a student and their education. We have many avenues for parent involvement at the Pinnacle that require various amounts of action.
Type of Involvement
Volunteer
- Parents are encouraged to volunteer at school in the classroom. Speak to your student’s teacher to get set up.
- Help at special events and extra curricular activities.
- Support our Athletic program. Attend the events and assist the coaches.
- If parents are unable to volunteer, they can support the school by becoming a Pinnacle Community Partner.
Communicate
- Communication with your student and the school is very important. We encourage parents to communicate with their teachers via email or by calling them at their extensions.
- You do not have to wait until the Parent/Teacher Conference Days to conference with your teacher(s). Email them or call them to schedule an appointment.
- Communicate with your student about what they learn each day regarding homework assignments, future projects, or special events. This will show them that you feel education is important.
- Give your feedback online. Tell us what you like or what you would like to see different.
Participate
Parents can participate in their student’s education in many ways that fit even the busiest schedules. Participation can be in different forms:
- Attend special events and field trips. This can be very rewarding for students and parents.
- Find volunteer needs that can be done from your home by checking with your teacher or the school newsletter.
- Set aside time each day to talk to your child about their day. Ask questions and offer your assistance. This can be one of the most valuable ways of participating in their education.
Support
Parents can support their student by:
- Offering positive feedback.
- Assisting your student to find the best time for homework and a work space.
- Staying tuned to school activities and school information.
- Viewing your student’s planner for homework assignments.
- Visiting schoolnotes.com where some teachers post daily homework assignments.
- Verbally reminding your students that they are available for questions and assistance.
- Committing to transporting them to and from school activities, if possible.
- Becoming a Pinnacle Community Partner.
